North Island Kokako
Here we have a friendly North Island Kokako, photographed on Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. They are a very allusive bird, whose numbers have plummeted in the past century. Small pockets of Kokako still survive in the wild due to conservation intervention and they have quickly become one of my favourite birds! Their call is quiet haunting and carries across valleys, but they only sing a few times a day, making them very hard to track!
